《麦克白》（1605）是莎士比亚戏剧中心理描写的佳作.全剧弥漫着一种阴鸷可怕的气氛.莎士比亚通过对曾经屡建奇勋的英雄麦克白变成一个残忍暴君的过程的描述,批判了野心对良知的侵蚀作用.由于女巫的蛊惑和夫人的影响,不乏善良本性的麦克白想干一番大事业的雄心蜕变成野心,而野心实现又导致了一连串新的犯罪,结果是倒行逆施,必然死亡.在迷信、罪恶、恐怖的氛围里,作者不时让他笔下的罪人深思、反省、剖析内心,麦克白夫妇弑君前后的心理变化显得层次分明,这就更加增大了悲剧的深度.
《麦克白》毕竟不是完全意义上的命运悲剧.这一点与古希腊的悲剧一比较便非常明白了.在古希腊的命运悲剧中,命运的力量是直接作用于人的.因此,从人物自身我们无法得出对他们命运的任何合乎逻辑的解释,最多也只是家庭遗传（如《阿加曼农》）,或是祖辈的罪孽（如《俄底浦斯王》）.但在莎剧《麦克白》,命运并不直接作用于人,而是通过人类自身的欲望、罪恶、性格等间接作用于人的.就像赫卡忒所说,命运让“种种虚伪的幻影迷乱他的本性”,让他在自身欲望的驱使下,一步步地走向自己既定的结局.
