How to cook steak

Before cooking steak, you need to prepare the marinade. You can create the marinade by mixing extra virgin olive oil, crushed black or green peppercorns, minced garlic, and sesame oil. If you wish, you can add other seasonings to the marinade, provided that they do not have very strong flavors.

After thoroughly mixing the marinade, soak the steak in it for at least 30 minutes. If your steak has a tougher cut, you may want to lengthen the marinating time.

If you want to marinate your steak for a shorter period of time, you can add soy sauce to the mixture. Do not soak your steak in a mixture that contains soy sauce for a long time as this would draw moisture from the steak.

After marinating, heat up your skillet until it is smoking. If you are using a non-stick pan, pre-heat it until it is very hot.

Pour a small amount of your marinade onto the pan. Then place your steak on the pan. Always remember that when putting food in a hot pan, your hands should be moving away from it.

Cook one side of the steak for 2 to 3 minutes. Afterwards, use a set of tongs to flip the steak over to its other side. You may notice some charring on the first side. This is perfectly normal.

To test the tenderness of the steak, use the tongs to press the meat. Check its resistance. Hard is well-done, firm is medium, and soft is rare.

After searing both sides, pick the steak up using the tongs and sear the edges for about half a minute.

If you notice a side of the steak which still needs charring, put the steak back on the pan. The said side should face the pan’s surface.

Once the steak is cooked, let is sit in a bowl for 10 to 15 minutes.

Take the burnt bits of the steak from the pan. Pour red wine and balsamic vinegar on the burnt bits. Place the mixture in a bowl. You can use this sauce for dipping.

Finally, you can cut the steak into small pieces and serve it. Remember to cut against the grain to make the slices more tender.
