From March 10 th to 21 st ,14 exchange students from Magee Secondary School led by Mr.Taylor,Vice Principal of Magee and other 2 teachers took a two-week visit to Nanyang Model High School.During the visit,the Canadian students and teachers visited Thames Town,Qibao Ancient Town,Huang Daopo Memorial Hall,Madam Song’s Residence,Shanghai Science & Technology Museum,Oriental Pearl TV Tower,Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall,Shanghai Museum and Guyi Garden,Nanxiang.They also participated in various kinds of school activities,such as playing basketball with Nanmo Basketball Team and listening to Nanmo Orchestra concert.Magee students experienced the life of ordinary Chinese families,appreciated ancient Chinese culture and enjoyed the modern highlights in Shanghai.They felt strong cultural shock in the first couple of days of their trip.Traffic congestion,huge crowds of people,flag-raising ceremony,eye massage – everything here struck them as novel; even the way people cross the street or the taste of Chinese food were quite different from those in Vancouver.In Huang Daopo Memorial Hall,they were enchanted by the ancient spinning machine.Many of them just couldn’t wait to try it by themselves and some of them quickly mastered the spinning skill and made their first thread.On the Oriental Pearl TV Tower,they were thrilled to reach such a high level in only a few seconds; along the Bund in Pudong,the beautiful skyline of Shanghai carried them away.Nanxiang dumplings were always their favorite Chinese snack.Canadian teenagers love shopping – that’s true.No matter where they went,they wouldn’t forget to take money and buy something.When they were in school,they went to have class not only with domestic students but also with BC Program students.They also took part in the “Talent Show” in BC program and a class meeting respectively.They enjoyed the wonderful performance and displayed their own talents in singing,dancing,painting and acting.Through the visit,students of both countries got a mutual understanding of their real culture and life.This is really a golden opportunity for young people from both countries to bridging the gap between western and eastern culture,which is an important basis for the future friendship and partnership of Canada and China.
