Strains caused by dynamic and static loads were taken in this
study for two main purposes.The first purpose was to detect the
presence of cracks in the test slab.Fig.8 shows the change in
dynamic strain as measured by Strain Gauge 3 before and after a
crack developed on Slab 2C.The dynamic strain data,which were recorded automatically at every hour,were used to determine the
exact time when cracking occurred on a test slab.
The second purpose for the strain measurement was to validate
the analytical stresses and strains as computed from the
FEACONS program as discussed in the next section .The mea-
sured maximum strains were found to agree fairly well generally
within 20% with the analytical results as calculated by the
FEACONS program.Fig.9 shows the comparison of computed
strains using the model and the measured dynamic strain at the
location of Gauge 1 on Slab 1C.
The closeness of the analytical strains to the measured strains
indicates that the FEACONS program can model the response of
the concrete slab fairly well and can be used to analyze the be-
havior of the slab under other critical load and thermal conditions.
Comparison of measured strains caused by the moving wheel
loads at 10 km/ h 6 mi/ h speed and static loads indicated that
they were very similar Fig.10 .This means that the results from
FEACONS,which uses a static analysis,can be applied to the
moving wheel loading conditions used in this study.
